Likewise, the game features several minor races who can join your empire to add bonuses.įinally, there are also Space Monsters within the game, since MoO II, who are mindless beasts that roam star systems of the galaxy. CtS, the reboot, returned to the original Orion Guardian but the DLC also brought back the menacing Antaran threat. MoO III also featured minor races, or magnate races, who occupied planets throughout the galaxy. MoO III featured Antarans in the story, but their role as menace was replaced by the New Orions. MoO II added the Antares as a great menace to the galaxy as they would actively pursue players. Most significantly the Orion race, represented by The Guardian within the original game. There are also non-playable races within each game. The Collector's Edition of CtS also includes a bonus race, the Terran Khanate, who are a separate playable faction of the Humans. None of the new races of MoO III made it into the reboot. The Revenge of Antares downloadable content added the three playable races of MoO II to the roster. 
Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars, which is a reboot of the franchise, returned to the original roster of ten with revamped designs and backstories. MoO III also added the concept of overarching species, suggesting that several races stemmed from the same origins such as the Saurian races, Grendarl, Raas and, from the original games, Sakkra. Master of Orion III took a different approach and retired several races, while also adding new ones.
The original Master of Orion had ten playable races, all of which returned for Master of Orion II: Battle of Antares, which also added three more races to the roster. The races have their own lore and their personalities are woven into the behaviour of the AI.
They all have their own Traits to give them unique play styles and have their own ship aesthetics to add visual variety during gameplay. Within the four Master of Orion games, there are many unique playable races. The original races from Master of Orion, which are also the original base races for Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars, as portrayed in this piece from the Master of Orion Artbook.
